How Gross WPM, Net WPM & KDPH Are Calculated
In central and state government skill tests, a "Standard Word" is defined as 5 key depressions (including spaces). This guarantees fair scoring regardless of whether a passage has short or long vocabulary:
- Gross WPM = (Total Key Depressions ÷ 5) ÷ Test Duration in Minutes.
- Key Depressions Per Hour (KDPH) = (Total Key Depressions ÷ Test Duration in Minutes) × 60.
- Net WPM = Gross WPM − (Penalty Mistakes ÷ Test Duration in Minutes).
- Accuracy % = (Net Correct Words ÷ Total Typed Words) × 100.
Full Mistakes vs. Half Mistakes in Official Evaluation
Commission guidelines (such as SSC CHSL DEST and High Court Skill Tests) classify typing deviations into two distinct categories:
- Full Mistakes (1.0 Error Penalty): Omission of a word, substitution of a wrong word, addition of a word not present in the passage, or spelling errors where letters are transposed or missed.
- Half Mistakes (0.5 Error Penalty): Wrong capitalization (case mismatch in English), punctuation spacing errors, or trailing punctuation discrepancies.
